How much of my Trip Cost should I insure?
Insure ALL pre-paid travel arrangements that have any cancellation penalties or restrictions.
You cannot insure arrangements for which you have made no payment (e.g.: frequent-flyer miles, credit vouchers, discount coupons, or certificates).
Do I need to insure my airfare cost?
If your airfare is subject to a cancellation penalty or restriction (most are), we recommend that you insure it. If you indicate that you want to insure your airfare by checking the "Air" checkbox on the Enrollment Form, you should include 100% of your airfare cost that is subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions.
Can I insure my frequent flyer miles?
No, frequent flyer miles cannot be insured.
What are the benefits to purchasing early rather than later?
While you may purchase the Travel Protection Plan with standard coverage up until you depart, you will receive the greatest benefits if you purchase this insurance within 21 calendar days of our receipt of your initial deposit:
- The Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion will be waived. Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits are not eligible for coverage if the reason for cancellation is due to a pre-existing medical condition. However, when the plan is purchased in the 21 day window, cancellations due to a chronic condition which becomes acute and/or causes you to seek treatment by a physician within the 90 days prior to the effective date of the Travel Protection Plan would be eligible for coverage.* This provision extends to you, your spouse, parents, children, and siblings.
*For residents of FL, ID and VT the pre-existing condition look-back period is 30 days prior to date premium received; for IL residents the period is 6 months from covered loss; for IN residents the period is 90 days from the policy effective date; for MT residents the period is 6 months prior to effective date; in NY the period is 6 months from effective date on emergency medical and dental benefits.
- You have the option to add the Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) upgrade. With CFAR, you can cancel your trip for any reason outside of those listed in the policy under the Trip Cancellation benefit and you will be reimbursed up to 75% of your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs not covered under the regular Plan benefits.
This upgrade option is at additional expense and must be purchased within 21 days from your initial deposit on the trip. Individuals must insure 100% of travel arrangements that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions and must not be disabled from travel at the time the premium is paid. To make a claim, the trip must be cancelled at least 2 days prior to the scheduled departure.
CFAR is not available to residents of NY, but NY residents may instead buy a Cancel For Any Fortuitous Reason (CFAFR) benefit as an optional upgrade. CFAFR must be purchased within 30 days from initial trip deposit and individuals must insure 90% of their travel arrangements. See policy for full details on CFAR and CFAFR.
What if I miss the purchase period for the Early Purchase Advantages?
You may still purchase coverage at any time prior to departure, however, the coverage would not include the early purchase benefits described above.
What if my dates or trip plans change, or there is an increase in Trip Cost?
Notify Travel Insurance Services in writing and include the additional plan cost in order to obtain the additional coverage. Failure to insure 100% of your non-refundable trip costs could result in the loss of eligibility for certain benefits such as the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver.
Will this plan cover me anywhere in the world?
Coverage is not available for travel to the following countries: Belarus, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Israel, Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan, Russia, Syria, and Ukraine. Traveling against the “do not travel” advice or recommendations made by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the World Health Organization (WHO) or the United States Department of State” may also exclude you from coverage.
I’m traveling with a friend. Am I covered if my friend cancels their trip?
A "Traveling Companion" means a person or persons accompanying the Insured on the covered trip and whose name is included with the Insured on the same trip arrangement for the Covered Trip. A group or tour leader is not considered a Traveling Companion, unless the Insured is sharing room accommodations with the group or tour leader.
If your Traveling Companion, as defined, cancels his or her Trip for a reason covered by the Travel Protection Plan, you are protected in two ways:
- If you decide to take your Trip, the plan will reimburse, up to the plan maximum, your additional cost as a result of a change in the per-person occupancy rate for prepaid travel arrangements, or
- If you decide not to take your Trip, your prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements may be covered. However, this only applies to select covered reasons, such as sickness, covered injury or death of your Traveling Companion. Other covered reasons only apply if an unforeseen event occurs to you.
See the Travel Protection Plan policy for complete details about this benefit.
Can I choose the benefits I wish to purchase? For example, can I just buy Trip Cancellation Protection?
The Travel Protection Plan is only offered as a package of benefits with the option to upgrade to Cancel for Any Reason if eligibility requirements are met.
